The history of football is a winding one. Because of the British Empire, British forms of football would take over globally. The question that we sought to answer was where does football come from? We argue that the origin of Rugby, Soccer, and American Football is a game called the Eton Field Game, but the lines are murky the history is open to interpretation.
We argue that because (1) it’s a formalized sport with a clear set of rules and (2) it’s the most well-preserved version of boarding school football from before carrying and tackling was re-introduced at the Rugby school where we would get Rugby and thereafter American Football.
We also give the full history of football through some of the weird sports that have cropped up along the way. Calcio (“kal-cho”) Florentino is a brutal sport and probably the most violent form of football still around today. Shrovetide football in British towns like Ashbourne and Kirkwell are almost as brutal. Both forms of football require one of two teams getting the ball to the other side of a town or plaza
