Three of Trump’s former top generals and more than a dozen former aides have issued a stark warning: Trump is a fascist, and he poses a serious threat to our democracy. As Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum observes, most autocrats today come to power through democratic elections, only to then “dismantle the state” from within. When Trump suggests he might use military force against civilians, Applebaum explains that he is essentially preparing his followers to “accept a breaking of the laws.”
