Today we explore the fascinating history of horse-drawn transportation regulations from ancient to modern times. From the Roman Empire’s traffic laws under Julius Caesar to Medieval Europe’s early speed limits and the regulatory practices brought to New Amsterdam by Dutch colonists. We make a special visit to early New York and its unique carting licenses (and accompanying racial discrimination), as well as the rise and fall of teamster corporations and their influence on deregulation. There’s a bit of a happy end to it all too, with the efforts of the animal welfare movement, particularly the SPCA’s role in regulating horse work and rescuing disabled horses. And, of course, as we all know, the advent of automobiles put an end to the widespread use of horses in transportation.
